Trump Escalates Trade War with India, Slapping 25% Additional Tariff Over Russia Oil

US President Donald Trump's recent decision to slap an additional 25% tariff on imports from India in response to its Russian oil purchases has stirred significant unease. This move escalates the tariff on Indian goods entering the US to a staggering 50%, marking one of the highest tariffs ever imposed by the United States.

This tariff hike, set to take effect on 27 August, has prompted a sharp rebuke from India's Ministry of External Affairs, which condemned the tariff as “unfair, unjustified, and unreasonable.” The Ministry's statement highlighted the unfortunate nature of the US's decision, particularly as other nations also engage in buying Russian oil for their national interests. “India will take all actions necessary to protect its national interests,” the statement added.

Trump's actions stem from his criticism of India's continued purchase of Russian oil amidst the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, accusing India of indifference to the human cost of the conflict. The White House has justified the heightened tariffs as a measure to counter the threat posed by Russia's actions in Ukraine to US national security, stating that Indian imports of Russian oil counteract US efforts in the region.

A White House statement further mentioned that the US is evaluating other countries that import oil from Russia and will propose additional measures as necessary. Russia's oil and gas exports, crucial to its economy, find major buyers in China, India, and Turkey.

During an interaction with the media at the White House, Trump hinted that the tariff on Indian goods was just the beginning, with more secondary sanctions expected. This move follows diplomatic attempts by Trump's envoy, Steve Witkoff, to mediate peace between Russia and Ukraine.

The new tariffs are expected to heavily impact Indian exports, including textiles, gems and jewellery, auto parts, and seafood—sectors vital for job creation in India. However, certain categories like electronics and pharmaceuticals are currently exempt from the tariff increase.

Delhi's initial response to Trump's threats highlighted the initial US encouragement for India to import Russian gas to stabilize global energy markets, especially after supplies traditionally directed to Europe were rerouted following the conflict's outbreak.

The tariff threat underscores Trump's readiness to use economic sanctions to influence the wartime actions of even close allies and major trading partners. With India being a significant trade partner for the US, the tension between the countries could impact their trade relations deeply. The Federation of India Exports Organisations has expressed shock over the decision, predicting severe impacts on a significant portion of India's exports to the US.

This trade rift comes despite the historically friendly relations between Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who have both praised each other in the past. However, diverging interests, particularly over India's energy imports from Russia, have led to this stark economic confrontation.

Experts, like former Indian trade official Ajay Srivastava, advise a calm approach, suggesting India avoid retaliatory measures for now and focus on fostering an environment conducive to meaningful trade negotiations with the US, free from threats or mistrust.
