Rising Fire Incidents Amid Disposable Vape Crisis Rock UK Waste Management
The prohibition on single-use vaping devices has not succeeded in curbing the rampant disposal issue, resulting in an ongoing dilemma for the UK’s waste management sector, according to a senior figure in a leading waste management company.
“We are witnessing an unprecedented influx of vapes causing disruptions, including increased incidences of fires, more than we’ve ever encountered,” remarked Roger Wright, strategy and packaging manager at the firm.

Despite the introduction of affordable, reusable vaping devices by manufacturers, consumers are discarding these at an alarming rate, opting to purchase new ones rather than refilling and recycling existing devices, Wright explained.
An advocate for the vaping industry defended the June prohibition as effective, attributing any surge in device disposal to the illicit market's activities.
In the lead-up to the ban's enforcement, Biffa's recycling facilities located in Suffolk, Teesside, and London reported approximately 200,000 vaping devices monthly being erroneously disposed of with regular recycling materials.
Post-ban statistics from the subsequent three months reveal a 3% increase in such cases.
Responsible for handling nearly one-fifth of the UK’s waste, Wright posits this issue extends across the industry, with an estimated total of one million vapes per month ending up in general recycling. A significant factor could be the clearance of disposable stock at reduced prices before the prohibition.
The vaping industry's response, according to Wright, has also played a part. Major vaping companies have launched reusable models closely resembling their disposable counterparts but at similar price points. Even with the addition of replaceable nicotine pods and USB charging ports, these are often discarded after use.
“The surge in reusable models appearing in rubbish collections indicates they are treated as disposable by consumers,” Wright observed.
The ban spurred a wave of innovation, with companies introducing a plethora of new products in an attempt to circumnavigate the restrictions, complicating recycling efforts if those items are collected.
However, Marcus Sexton, chairman of the Independent British Vape Trade Association, insists the ban has met its objectives, suggesting that the data shows a consumer shift towards refilling and recharging devices.
“This implies that any disposables entering the recycling system could be remnants from illegal sales or the black market,” Sexton added.
Vapes, containing lithium batteries, pose a fire risk when compressed, leading to frequent fires in waste facilities and trucks, thus earning the moniker “bombs in bins.” To prevent such hazards, vapes should be returned to retailers or dedicated recycling centers instead of being mixed with general waste or recycling.
In June, Biffa faced 60 fires attributed to vapes and other small electrical appliances. The company estimates that dealing with these issues costs the UK's waste management sector approximately a billion pounds annually.
The ban's intent was to mitigate the environmental impact and hazards of millions of inappropriately disposed of vaping devices.
Wright suggests that doorstep collection of vapes and electrical devices could significantly enhance recovery rates, positing that residents are more likely to participate in kerbside collections than return items to a store.
Some local councils have already adopted this approach.
In defense of the ban, a government spokesperson emphasized, “Single-use vapes not only addict youths to nicotine but also deface our urban landscapes, prompting stringent measures.”
The government has mandated recycling bins at retailers and is formulating a circular economy strategy aiming at amplifying electrical equipment's reuse and recycling.
