Adidas Triumphs in Legal Battle Over Kanye West Partnership Fallout

Adidas has successfully defended itself against allegations from investors who claimed the company concealed misbehaviour by the renowned rapper and entrepreneur Kanye West, known as Ye, ahead of their partnership dissolution in 2022.

How Adidas Defended Its Reputation and Share Value Amid Kanye West Controversy: Legal Insights

A court in San Francisco concluded that the sportswear titan did not deceive its shareholders, who argued that their financial losses were a result of Adidas' stock price plummeting following the severance of ties with West.

The collaboration between Adidas and Ye's Yeezy brand was amongst the company's most lucrative ventures. However, the relationship soured and eventually collapsed due to the rapper's series of anti-Semitic comments, costing the firm hundreds of millions in revenue.

Efforts to reach Adidas for a statement were unsuccessful, and neither the lawyers leading the shareholder lawsuit nor West's representatives have commented on the matter.

West faced widespread condemnation for espousing anti-Semitic views and endorsing conspiracy theories. His partnership with Adidas came under scrutiny after he showcased a “White Lives Matter” T-shirt during a 2022 fashion show and subsequently shared anti-Semitic statements online, leading Adidas to discontinue his product line.

Furthermore, West's conduct resulted in other corporations, including Gap and JP Morgan, cutting ties with him.

Legal documents submitted on Wednesday detailed that HLSA-ILA Funds, the investment firm acting on behalf of the investors, accused Adidas of prolonging its partnership with West despite being aware of his contentious actions for years. The firm alleged that Adidas “internally struggled” with West's behaviour yet did not appropriately inform its shareholders of the prevailing risks in its financial disclosures.

Nevertheless, the 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco sided with Adidas, asserting on Wednesday that a sensible investor would understand that partnering with a high-profile figure like West inherently bears risks related to misconduct.

An earlier dismissal of HLSA-ILA's lawsuit by a district court led to the appeal.

The termination of the partnership between Adidas and West significantly impacted the German brand's shares in 2023. The Yeezy line, particularly noted for its luxury sneakers designed by West, was a significant revenue source for Adidas, generating approximately £870 million in 2021.

Following the partnership's end, Adidas was left with over £870 million worth of unsold Yeezy footwear. In 2023, the company announced its plans to sell off this inventory, committing to donate a portion of the proceeds to charities dedicated to fighting hate.
