Transform Your Vacation Planning with AI: Insights from a Family's European Adventure

When Jason Brown was mapping out his summer jaunt to Amsterdam and Ireland, which included stops in Dublin and Galway, he bypassed traditional travel guides and social media. Instead, the entrepreneur behind recruitment firm People Movers turned to ChatGPT, the generative AI creation from OpenAI, to craft his 10-day journey scheduled for July and August alongside his wife, their two sons aged 20 and 16, and a mate of one of his boys.

“Previously, I'd lean on platforms such as TripAdvisor, but then I saw the wealth of knowledge accessible instantly via AI, and it churns out options in mere seconds,” he remarked, praising the tool's efficiency. “It was a brilliant experience.”

Brown detailed how ChatGPT laid out a golf schedule in Dublin and provided a meticulously segmented four-day plan for the rest of their Irish visit. “It was astonishing how it broke down the itinerary into morning, afternoon, and night,” he said, admiring the AI's precision. In Amsterdam, the AI did not disappoint, highlighting must-visits including the Anne Frank House, Van Gogh Museum, and the charming Jordaan area.

Though he embraced many of AI's recommendations, Brown also valued human insights, drawing on advice from an online community of his alma mater and from friends during their Amsterdam stay. “It offered us unique experiences we wouldn’t have stumbled upon through ChatGPT alone. But, it does lay down an excellent trip framework,” he observed.

This move toward integrating AI into travel planning isn't isolated. With tools like Google’s Gemini, Microsoft’s Copilot, and bespoke travel AI platforms like Trip Planner and Ask Layla emerging, travelers are increasingly turning to AI for inspiration and guidance. A survey conducted by Sainsbury’s Bank Travel Money reveals a growing trend amongst British travelers, with one in ten having already utilized AI for trip planning and a further 20% considering its future use.

However, the study indicates there's room for improvement, with users pointing out issues like generic responses, missing or incorrect information. Caroline Bremmer, Head of Travel and Tourism Research at Euromonitor International, highlighted the importance of AI being as accurate as possible. “The real challenge lies in offering up-to-the-minute, factually solid information. Consumers ought to cross-verify Gen AI's output with trusted sources, engaging with locals or travel experts,” she recommended.

Over in Berlin, Sardar Bali, co-founder of AI travel planner Just Ask Layla, emphasized the significance of content accuracy, noting their robust verification processes. Yet, he admitted that certain inaccuracies occasionally slip through.

Expedia too has joined the fray, launching an AI-driven service within their US iPhone app, designed to simplify the multifaceted nature of trip planning by comparing locales and themes based on user preferences.

Despite the potential of AI to revolutionize travel planning, some, like Liverpool-based freelance writer Rebecca Crowe, urge caution following less-than-ideal recommendations. From impractical itineraries to outdated restaurant suggestions, Crowe's experiences underline the necessity for thorough cross-checking against AI's proposals.

She advises treating AI as a source of broad inspiration but suggests turning to blogs and direct guides for the most reliable and current advice. “AI can kickstart your imagination for what’s possible in a destination, yet the legwork to confirm its suggestions often means the time saved is minimal,” Crowe concluded.
