UK Braces for Historic Holiday Rush: Top Travel Predictions for Christmas Eve 2025
The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has announced that this Christmas Eve is set to witness an unprecedented number of passengers travelling through UK airports, reaching a record high since data collection began in 1972. An estimated 335,000 individuals are expected to fly within the UK on the day, marking a 5% increase compared to the same day in 2024, with little to no disruption anticipated.
In parallel, the RAC predicts that the nation's roads will experience one of their busiest Christmas Eves on record. However, another road traffic organisation suggests that the peak travel period for the season may have already occurred. The RAC advises motorists that the peak travel window on Wednesday spans from 1 pm to 7 pm, as millions embark on their journeys home in anticipation of Christmas Day on Thursday. Major routes are expected to face delays.

Manchester Airport is gearing up for a busy day, expecting around 75,000 passengers and 208 flights departing the UK, although these figures are expected to drop by half on Christmas Day. The most sought-after destinations from Manchester on Christmas Eve include Amsterdam, Paris, and Dublin.
Heathrow Airport is anticipating its busiest December on record, with 152,000 passengers forecasted to travel through its terminals on Christmas Day alone. EasyJet has declared it will operate 558 flights on Christmas Day, highlighting this year as its busiest festive season to date. On the contrary, Stansted Airport anticipates a quieter Christmas Day.
The 19th of December emerged as the busiest day for air travel during the holiday period.
The RAC has also highlighted several congestion hotspots on the roads, including the M25's northern and western sections and the M5 north towards the West Midlands in the afternoon. The early cessation of train services on Christmas Eve is likely to push more travellers onto the roads, exacerbating congestion.
Rail services will be subject to restrictions and closures over the Christmas break for maintenance works. No National Rail trains will operate on Christmas Day, and a limited service will run on Boxing Day.
National Express coaches have announced services running to 96 destinations on Christmas Day.
Nick Mullender, the team leader of the RAC's mobile servicing and repair, stated that 2025 is poised to be the busiest festive travel period on record since they began tracking in 2013. He noted that this year's Christmas Eve is particularly busy, with individuals opting for last-minute getaways, coinciding with efforts to conserve annual leave days.
The AA highlighted that the 19th of December was the busiest time for road traffic this season and warned of significant works on the M27, leading to its closure in both directions between Junction 9 and Junction 11 from 8 pm until 4 am on 4 January. This will affect travel between Southampton and Portsmouth.
Motorists are advised to check their vehicles before departure, prepare for potential delays, and ensure their cars are equipped for colder weather conditions to avoid breakdowns. An estimated 4.2 million journeys are expected to be made on the roads.
Travellers are also encouraged to stay informed on how the weather might impact their Christmas travel plans and to check for updates on other modes of transport, including ferries, to ensure a smooth journey during the festive period.
