Oasis' Spectacular Comeback Fuels 2025 Music Scene, Amidst Vinyl's Resurgence and Streaming Growth

In a year that saw the UK music scene flourish, Taylor Swift once again proved unstoppable, clinching the top spot in the UK music charts for 2025 with her twelfth studio album, “The Life of a Showgirl”. The pop sensation sold a staggering 642,000 copies since its October release, leading a female-dominated year in music.

Emerging British talents Olivia Dean and Lola Young were at the forefront, propelling the industry to a historic high with a nearly 5% increase in combined sales, reaching 201 million albums either purchased or streamed.

2025 also marked a significant comeback for Oasis, driven by a sensational reunion tour which saw them surpass one million album sales. Their greatest hits collection, “Time Flies”, secured the fourth spot in the year's album rankings, with their classic, “(What's The Story) Morning Glory?” not far behind in seventh.

This information came courtesy of the British Phonographic Industry (BPI), which also noted that streaming now represents 89% of the total music market.

The year witnessed an impressive 210.3 billion song streams, with Alex Warren's “Ordinary” emerging as the most played track. Notably, the charts were dominated by older hits, with six of the top ten tracks released in 2024, and Chappell Roan's “Pink Pony Club”, an outlier from 2020, still making waves.

2025 was a standout year for new female artists in the UK. Lola Young secured the year's second biggest single with “Messy”, while Olivia Dean made history by scoring her first number one single (“Man I Need”) and album (“The Art Of Loving”) in the same week – a first for any female artist in the UK.

Dean expressed her intent for the album to serve as an emotional sanctuary, aiming for it to “feel like a hug – comforting,” during her conversation on the Reporters's Sidetracked podcast.

Notable mentions also go to Skye Newman and Sienna Spiro for their introspective songwriting, as well as established artists such as Raye, PinkPantheress, and Wet Leg who continued to build on their initial success. Moreover, Jade, formerly of Little Mix, made a splash with her debut album, “That's Showbiz, Baby!”, achieving the biggest opening week for a debut.

The year also saw vinyl sales continuing their upward trend, marking an 18th consecutive year of growth with a 13% increase to 7.6 million units sold, with Swift's “Life Of A Showgirl” leading the charge. This surge in vinyl popularity puts it on track to surpass CD sales for the first time since the 1990s.

Adding to the diverse music formats, cassette tapes also enjoyed a resurgence, with sales up by 53.8%.

Further highlighting the UK's musical reach, Olivia Dean and Lola Young both made their mark on the US Billboard charts and are contenders for best new artist at the upcoming Grammy Awards. Other UK acts making international waves include Yungblud, Sleep Token, Wolf Alice, and Florence + The Machine, alongside Ed Sheeran's notable achievement of topping India's Spotify Charts with “Sapphire”.

Dr Jo Twist, CEO of the BPI, praised the UK's achievement as the world's second-largest music exporter, emphasising the competitive nature of the global music scene and the essential support from the British government to sustain this standing.
