Jeff Bezos's Blue Origin Unveils TeraWave: The Next Generation in High-Speed Satellite Internet

Blue Origin, the aerospace manufacturer owned by Amazon's founder, Jeff Bezos, has announced ambitious plans to deploy over 5,400 satellites into orbit to forge a new communications framework named TeraWave. This network aims to provide ubiquitous internet coverage worldwide, boasting the capability to transmit vast quantities of data at speeds far surpassing those of current competitors.

Despite its extensive satellite fleet, Blue Origin will still trail behind Elon Musk's Starlink, a leading force in the satellite broadband sector. Unlike Starlink, which caters to individual customers offering internet and telephony services, TeraWave is designed to serve data centres, corporate businesses, and governmental entities.

Blue Origin has revealed that TeraWave's potential peak performance could reach upload and download rates as high as 6 terabits per second, a significant leap beyond what is presently available from commercial satellite providers.

Interestingly, Blue Origin finds itself in competition not just with Musk's Starlink but also with Amazon's own satellite venture, Project Leo. Despite Bezos's continued involvement as Amazon's executive chairman, following his 2021 resignation as CEO, Project Leo aims to saturate the orbit with over 3,000 satellites. Having only recently boosted its count by scores, it proposes to deliver high-speed internet access across the globe mainly to individual users, similar to Starlink's user demographic. The full deployment timeline for Leo remains undisclosed.

TeraWave's launch series is scheduled to commence by the end of 2027, marking a significant step forward in Blue Origin's portfolio, which noted a triumphant landing of a rocket booster on a floating platform in November, a technical feat previously only achieved by SpaceX.

April saw Blue Origin undertaking a notable 11-minute space journey featuring an all-women crew, including Bezos' partner Lauren Sánchez, pop icon Katie Perry, and television journalist Gayle King. However, this star-studded expedition has been critiqued by some as being disconnected from the economic realities many are facing, labeling it as “tone deaf.”

As the satellite internet race heats up, Blue Origin's TeraWave project sets the stage for a dynamic shift in global communications, promising rapid data transfer capabilities with its sights set on a predominantly institutional clientele, distinguishing itself in an increasingly crowded market.
