2023 Sunday Times Tax List Unveiled: From Harry Styles to the Done Brothers
The Betfred co-founders, brothers Fred and Peter Done, have emerged as the UK's leading taxpayers, according to the latest Sunday Times Tax List, marking their dominance in the gambling industry. Establishing their Warrington enterprise in 1967, the Dones have ascended the ranks with a staggering £400.1m in tax contributions over the preceding year, highlighting their substantial financial footprint.
The list, making its exterior debut, includes other notable figures such as pop sensation Harry Styles, heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua, and celebrated author JK Rowling. Manchester City's forward Erling Haaland, only 25, presents as the youngest on the list, taking the 72nd spot with a prospective £16.9m tax contribution. Liverpool's star Mo Salah is also featured, with an anticipated £14.5m tax bill.

This year's compilation underscores a collective £5.758bn tax payment by the top 100 taxpayers, marking an increase from the previous year's £4.985bn. Rowling, a consistent figure on the list, finds herself in 36th place with a £47.5m bill, while Ed Sheeran and Joshua occupy the 64th and 100th spots, paying £19.9m and £11m, respectively. Styles broke into the list with a £24.7m contribution.
Among the top taxpayers is Wetherspoon's founder Sir Tim Martin, who significantly contributes with an estimated £199.7m, positioning himself in eighth place. The Done brothers' tax bill saw an increase from the previous year's £273.4m, with 45 individuals from the top 100 paying more tax than in the preceding list.
The rise in tax contributions has been attributed in part to the increase in corporation tax from 19% to 25% implemented in 2023 by the former government, alongside a higher dividend tax rate. Starting their journey from modest beginnings, the Done siblings constructed a billion-pound fortune, defying their early departure from formal education at 15.
Other noteworthy contributors include financial trading mogul Alex Gerko, with a £331.4m tax bill, and hedge fund titan Chris Rokos, trailing closely with £330m. Despite some high-earners leaving the UK, potentially to evade higher taxes and the discontinuation of non-dom status, the list includes individuals such as Revolut's Nik Storonsky, Wren Kitchens' Malcolm Healey, and sports promoter Eddie Hearn.
The Sunday Times' enumeration of the top 10 UK taxpayers showcases a varied group spanning different industries, from gambling magnates and traders to retail heavyweights and healthcare pioneers. This diversity, as noted by list compiler Robert Watts, echoes the changing face of UK wealth, highlighting a significant uptick in tax contributions driven chiefly by elevated corporation tax rates. The exactness of these figures remains unverified by HMRC due to privacy policies, preserving the confidentiality of individual tax affairs.
