How to Save £40 Annually on Fuel Costs with the New UK Government Initiative
Motorists throughout the UK are now empowered to find the most competitive fuel prices as a new government initiative takes effect, enabling consumers to compare prices at petrol stations nationwide.
Commencing this Monday, fuel retailers are obligated to update their pricing information on external apps and websites within 30 minutes, a move designed to foster transparency and competition within the industry.

The Chancellor, Rachel Reeves, has touted the Fuel Finder Scheme as a potential means for the average family to save approximately £40 annually on fuel costs. This initiative comes in response to concerns raised by motoring organisations about the considerable price variance for fuel, which can fluctuate by as much as 20p per litre across different regions.
The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), the UK's regulatory body overseeing competitive market practices, has endorsed the scheme, highlighting its potential to drive competitive pricing and benefit consumers. This endorsement follows a series of CMA reports scrutinising fuel pricing at UK petrol stations, which identified a lack of competition and high retailer profit margins as ongoing issues.
Despite the Petrol Retailers Association pointing to increased operational costs, including wages and taxes, the CMA has criticised the slow response of retail fuel prices to fluctuating crude oil prices, with costs quick to rise but slow to decrease.
The proposed policy, initially introduced by the Conservative party in 2023 and later incorporated into last year's budget by the Labour government, relies on third-party apps and websites rather than a specific government tool to guide drivers to the most affordable fuel options. This approach leverages existing comparison platforms, such as PetrolPrices, Waze, My RAC, and the AA app, which now have access to a comprehensive and mandatory database of fuel prices.
Drivers are encouraged to report any discrepancies between advertised prices on comparison platforms and those at the petrol stations to ensure accuracy and integrity in the scheme.
Fuel prices, currently at their lowest since July 2021 according to the RAC, stand at 131.91p per litre for petrol and 140.97p for diesel. With the new scheme, Simon Williams, RAC head of policy, anticipates a more transparent and competitive fuel market, benefiting the UK's 8,300 forecourts and their consumers.
