U.S. President Trump Vows to End Relations with AI Firm Anthropic, Cites National Security Concerns
In an unprecedented move on Friday, US President Donald Trump announced his decision to mandate all federal bodies to cease deploying technology solutions provided by AI enterprise Anthropic, expressing resolute opposition via a Truth Social media statement, “We don't need it, we don't want it, and will not do business with them again!”
This development comes as tensions escalate between the Trump administration and Anthropic, centred around contentious debates over the utilisation of the firm's Artificial Intelligence capabilities in military operations and home security implementations.
Trump's comments surfaced mere hours ahead of a critical deadline set by the Pentagon, seeking unrestricted access to Anthropic's suite of AI technologies.
Dario Amodei, Anthropic's chief executive, earlier in the week, firmly declined to succumb to the Pentagon's demands, highlighting concerns over potential misuse in mass surveillance undertakings and the creation of autonomous weaponry systems.
In response, Trump asserted that the government will gradually phase out Anthropic's technology from its operations within a six-month timeframe.
As the Pentagon's ultimatum loomed, Trump intensified his rhetoric on the Truth Social platform, warning Anthropic to cooperate during this transition period or face severe repercussions, invoking “the Full Power of the Presidency” to ensure compliance, with implications of substantial legal actions to follow.
Prior to Trump's declaration, Anthropic had conveyed its willingness to facilitate a seamless transition to an alternative service provider, should the US Defense Department opt to discontinue usage of the company's technologies.
The President further lambasted Anthropic as “woke” and criticised the firm for its purported extreme leftist ideologies, accusing it of being “an out-of-control, Radical Left AI company run by people who have no idea what the real World is all about”.
Anthropic has been servicing the US government and military since 2024 but refrained from commenting on the recent developments.
In the days leading to Trump's decision, Anthropic found itself receiving backing from notable industry figures, including OpenAI chief Sam Altman, who echoed a similar stance on refusing to compromise on AI ethical safeguards in defense applications.
Amidst these unfolding events, approximately 700,000 technology professionals from giants like Amazon, Google, and Microsoft, alongside the Alphabet Workers Union, vocalised their solidarity in refusing to align with the Pentagon's demands, underpinning a collective stance against the militarisation of technological advancements.
The confrontation reached a peak when US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth summoned Amodei to a high-stakes meeting in Washington DC, culminating in a stand-off with Anthropic refusing to concede to the demands for unbridled access to its AI tools.
Despite threats from Hegseth to employ the Defense Production Act and label Anthropic a “supply chain risk”, Amodei remained steadfast, preferring to sever ties with the Pentagon rather than capitulate.
Insiders suggest that Anthropic, buoyed by a recent valuation at $380 billion and a contract worth $200 million with the Pentagon, stands firm in its position, with the Department of Defense's legal grounds for its threats perceived as “extremely flimsy”.
