Gulf Conflict Escalation Leads to Major Air Traffic Disruptions Over Azerbaijan, Impacting UK Flights
Airspace Closure Over Azerbaijan Exacerbates Global Airline Disruption Amid Gulf Conflict
UK aviation is facing increased challenges as the southern airspace of Azerbaijan is closed due to the escalating conflict in the Gulf, putting extra strain on airlines already struggling to navigate the disruptions.

In times of peace, this region serves as a pivotal hub for international air travel. However, a recent drone attack on Azerbaijan has forced many airlines to reroute flights through a congested corridor in the country’s north.
Aviation expert John Strickland highlighted the limited options now faced by airlines, saying, “The range of options for airlines trying to circumnavigate the current situation is very limited.”
Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Western airlines have been bypassing Russian and Siberian airspace. The situation is further complicated as flights now also avoid Iranian and Iraqi airspace, opting for alternative routes further north or south.
Flightradar24 revealed data indicating significant congestion in a strip approximately 100km wide across northern Azerbaijan, a nation about the size of Portugal.
Gulf-based airlines have increased operations from the UAE and Oman to aid stranded passengers. However, Qatar has halted flights, and overall capacity is significantly reduced, according to the industry risk information provider, Opsgroup.
“The key air corridor through Iran, Iraq, and the Gulf is effectively shut, diverting most traffic north via the Caucasus and Afghanistan, or south via Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Oman,” explained David Mumford, an international operations specialist at Opsgroup, noting the increase in flight times and fuel consumption due to the more extensive and busier routes.
Since the attacks commenced Saturday, air traffic has sharply declined, forcing airlines to use these constricted passages.
Strickland warned that passengers might face longer flight times due to the detours. Some airlines had preemptively altered their routes as tensions in the Gulf escalated, with even more forced to take southern paths to bypass the conflict zones this week.
The congestion, particularly prominent during peak travel times, presents “another significant complication for airline planning,” on top of existing challenges such as weather conditions and the domino effect of delays on subsequent flights.
While most airlines avoid making extra stops despite longer routes, Qantas introduced a refueling layover in Singapore for its direct Perth to London flight. Routes to India now take longer, skirting south of the Gulf.
The situation in Azerbaijan, a crucially positioned oil-rich nation, is closely monitored, noted David Kaminski, Flight Global's air transport editor. Any deeper involvement in the conflict could spell severe disruption for airlines, potentially blocking vast swathes of airspace.
Should the conflict extend, Gulf carriers might need to rethink their business strategies, which have turned their hub cities into major tourist and transit points.
“Their model of using cities as connecting hubs for flights from Europe to Asia could be at risk if the conflict prolongs,” he said, suggesting that cities like Riyadh or Istanbul, which is expanding its airport, might seek to benefit from any continued disruption.
