Anthropic to Challenge U.S. Government's Supply Chain Risk Classification

London's Mayor, Sir Sadiq Khan, has extended an invitation to the San Francisco-based AI company, Anthropic, encouraging its expansion in the British capital amidst criticisms directed at the Trump administration for its retaliatory actions against the firm.

The outreach by Sir Sadiq to Anthropic's chief, Dario Amodei, was sparked by the Pentagon's recent classification of Anthropic as a supply chain risk. This designation came after Amodei's refusal to grant U.S. defence bodies unrestricted access to the firm's AI capabilities.

Expressing his concern, Sir Sadiq conveyed in his letter, “It is deeply troubling to witness such attempts to intimidate and penalize Anthropic for upholding ethical standards.”

In response to this designation, Anthropic intends to contest it legally.

Regarding Sir Sadiq's letter and proposition, a White House spokesperson retorted, citing President Trump's stance against permitting a “radical left, woke company to influence the operational strategy of the United States Military.”

Inquiries to Anthropic were made, with confirmation from a spokesperson in the Mayor's office that dialogues had occurred recently with the company's top officials.

Anthropic's objection, voiced by Amodei during discussions with the U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, centered around the potential use of its Claude model for extensive domestic surveillance or autonomous military operations.

The Pentagon countered, insisting on the military's right to utilize technology “for all legal purposes,” debunking the speculations of such feared applications as illegal and not under consideration.

In a move last week, President Trump announced his directive for federal agencies to cease the use of Anthropic's technology forthwith.

Sir Khan, applauding the resilience shown by Anthropic, encouraged dialogue on potential support for the company's expansion, suggesting that London could serve as a pivotal hub for Anthropic's future growth.

This gesture by Sir Sadiq presents London as a promising haven for Anthropic amid the escalating tensions between the company and the U.S. government.

Following stalled negotiations with the Department of Defense, Under Secretary of Defense Emil Michael officially announced the cessation of discussions with Anthropic via a post on X, underscoring the end of speculation regarding any active negotiations.

This Pentagon classification marks an unprecedented move against a U.S. company, branding Anthropic as a supply chain hazard, deeming it insecure for government usage.

Despite initial concerns within Anthropic regarding potential fallout with partners also engaged with the U.S. government, the adverse impacts have yet to materialize.

Microsoft, in a display of continuing support, affirmed its commitment to incorporating Anthropic's technology in its offerings to clients, while specifically excluding the U.S. Department of Defense, based on legal analysis of the recent designation.
