Trump Hails Saudi Arabia as “No Stronger Partner” on Gulf Investment Tour
US President Donald Trump has declared that the United States has “no stronger partner” than Saudi Arabia during the opening leg of his first major foreign tour of his second term. In Riyadh, Trump and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman announced a staggering $142 billion (£107 billion) arms agreement alongside additional investment commitments the prince said could eventually total $1 trillion.
The US leader, who also made Saudi Arabia the inaugural foreign stop of his presidency in 2017, was greeted with lavish ceremony – including a lavender carpet symbolic of the kingdom’s desert blooms, chosen to match his own purple tie. Mr Trump praised the “wealth that has poured – and is pouring – into America” as he addressed a US–Saudi investment forum, asserting that economic collaboration would help the Middle East “transcend violence and division”.
In a surprise move, Trump announced the lifting of sanctions on Syria to afford the war-torn nation “a chance at greatness”, a decision he attributed to lobbying by the Saudi crown prince. He is expected to meet Syria’s newly appointed President Ahmed al‑Sharaa later in Riyadh.
Accompanied by business figures including Elon Musk, Trump emphasised his ambition to expand the Abraham Accords to include Saudi Arabia – a prospect the crown prince has conditioned on a permanent ceasefire in Gaza and progress towards Palestinian statehood. Trump’s brief reference to the Israel–Hamas conflict expressed sympathy for Gazans “deserving a better future” and criticised Hamas’s October 2023 attacks.
After Saudi Arabia, Trump will visit Qatar and the UAE, which has already pledged $1.4 trillion in US investments over the next decade. The tour underscores his administration’s focus on foreign capital as a driver for domestic economic growth.
