Trump Escalates Trade War, Slaps Mammoth 50% Tariff on Brazilian Goods Over Legal Feuds
US President Announces 50% Tariff on Brazilian Goods in Escalated Trade Dispute
US President Donald Trump has declared his intention to levy a 50% tariff on Brazilian-made goods, intensifying his trade skirmish with the Latin American nation. The announcement came through a tariff notice disseminated on social media, wherein Trump levelled accusations of “attacks” on US technology firms and of orchestrating a “witch hunt” against Brazil's ex-president Jair Bolsonaro, who is currently under legal scrutiny for his alleged involvement in a coup plot following the 2022 election.

Brazil's President, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, retaliated on social media, stating that any tariff hikes on Brazilian exports would be met with equivalent measures. Lula further cautioned against any meddling in Brazil's judicial affairs.
The tariff discourse saw Trump and Lula clashing earlier in the week over the ongoing legal proceedings against Bolsonaro. Lula underscored the principle that “no one is above the law,” rebuffing any external “interference.”
In a separate development on Wednesday, Trump indicated that a previously announced 50% tariff on copper imports would be implemented starting 1 August, citing national security grounds. This week, Trump has issued 22 tariff letters to countries worldwide, including Japan, South Korea, and Sri Lanka, signalling impending tariff impositions set for 1 August – a significant policy shift from his earlier stance in April, which faced backlash from financial markets.
The letter to Brazil, however, posed a more pointed threat, significantly ramping up from the previously announced 10% tariff on Brazilian goods. Trump argued the 50% tariff was essential “to rectify the grave injustices” of the current regime and announced plans for a 301 investigation into Brazil's digital trade practices – a move marking a more aggressive legal stance towards imposing tariffs, reminiscent of actions taken in Trump's first term.
Trump accused the Brazilian government of undermining “Free Elections and the fundamental Free Speech Rights of Americans,” specifically targeting “US Social Media platforms.” Trump's social media company, Trump Media, is among those contesting Brazilian court orders related to social media account suspensions.
The US president also extended support to Bolsonaro, expressing “great respect” and decrying his trial as “an international disgrace.” Trump and Bolsonaro, often compared for their similar political stances and having shared a warm relationship during their overlapping terms, faced electoral defeats and controversies over their refusal to concede.
Fallout over Bolsonaro's trial and a controversial Brics summit in Rio de Janeiro, which Trump criticized as “anti-American,” have marked recent interactions between the two nations. In light of Trump's tariff threats, President Lula remarked, “He needs to know that the world has changed. We don't want an emperor,” signalling a defiant stance against US pressures.
