U.S. Government to Phase Out Anthropic AI Following Presidential Directive

In a decisive move, US President Donald Trump announced on Friday his directive for all federal agencies to immediately cease using technology developed by artificial intelligence company Anthropic. Trump's declaration came through a post on Truth Social, where he emphatically stated, “We don't need it, we don't want it, and will not do business with them again!”

The directive is the culmination of ongoing tensions between the Trump administration and Anthropic concerning the control over the application of the company's AI technologies in military operations and domestic security environments.

This development occurred just ahead of a critical deadline set by the Pentagon for Anthropic to provide it with unrestricted access to the company's AI capabilities. Dario Amodei, the head of Anthropic, earlier in the week, firmly stated his refusal to succumb to such pressures, citing concerns over the potential use of the technology in mass surveillance and the deployment of fully autonomous weaponry.

Following Trump's announcement, government departments will gradually phase out the use of Anthropic's technology over an ensuing six-month period. Trump admonished the firm via Truth Social, suggesting that Anthropic should cooperate during the phase-out process or face the “Full Power of the Presidency,” implying severe civil and criminal consequences.

Before Trump's public declaration, Anthropic had expressed willingness to ensure a smooth transition for the US Department of Defense to another technology provider if necessary.

Trump also leveled criticism at Anthropic, branding it a “woke” organisation and denouncing it as a “Radical Left AI company.” He accused its leadership of being detached from reality.

Anthropic has been engaged with the US government and military since 2024 but did not immediately respond to requests for comments on the matter.

In support of Anthropic's stance, notably, OpenAI's chief, Sam Altman, expressed solidarity with Amodei, his counterpart at Anthropic. Altman, in a communication to his team, outlined a firm stance against employing their technology in applications deemed unlawful or inappropriate, including mass surveillance and autonomous offensive weaponry. This dispute highlights deeper divisions and ethical considerations within the tech industry regarding the militarisation of AI technologies.

The contretemps has drawn support for Anthropic from across the tech sector, including a collective letter from groups representing around 700,000 workers from tech giants such as Amazon, Google, and Microsoft, all of which hold contracts with the Defence Department. These workers urge their employers to resist Pentagon's demands, emphasising a united stance against the involvement of their technology in warfare.

The situation escalated following a demand from US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth for Anthropic to allow “any lawful use” of its AI tools, counterposed with threats of invoking the Defense Production Act and deeming Anthropic a “supply chain risk.”

Amodei's refusal to yield to such threats, coupled with Trump's subsequent directives, underscores the high-stakes confrontation between the government and Anthropic. This episode not only highlights tensions over the use of AI in military and security contexts but also reflects growing resistance within the tech industry against contributing to warfare and surveillance state capabilities.
