Navigating the Skies: How the Azerbaijan Airspace Closure Impacts International Flights
The imposition of a no-fly zone over the southern expanse of Azerbaijan is exacerbating the difficulties faced by airlines in mitigating the fallout from ongoing conflicts in the Gulf region. This area, typically a bustling nexus for international air traffic, has seen profound disruptions.
Following a drone strike on the Central Asian nation, a considerable volume of air traffic has been rerouted through a congested corridor over Azerbaijan's northern territory. Aviation specialist John Strickland highlighted the limited alternatives now available to carriers navigating these troubled skies.
Since the onset of hostilities in Ukraine in 2022, Western airlines have circumvented Russian and Siberian airspace. The closure of skies over Iran and Iraq has compounded this situation, forcing carriers to seek detours to the north or south.
Data from Flightradar24, an online flight tracker, underscores the acute congestion within a narrow 100km band across Azerbaijan, a nation comparable in size to Portugal.
In response, Gulf-based airlines are increasing operations out of the United Arab Emirates and Oman to facilitate the evacuation of stranded passengers. However, flight operations from Qatar remain suspended, and overall flight capacity is significantly reduced, according to Opsgroup, a risk consultancy for the aviation sector.
David Mumford of Opsgroup elaborated, “The primary corridor through Iran, Iraq, and the Gulf has effectively been shuttered, rerouting the majority of traffic either northwards via the Caucasus and Afghanistan, or southwards through Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Oman.” These detours not only lengthen flight durations but also escalate fuel consumption.
The commencement of the attacks last Saturday saw a marked decline in air traffic as airlines were compelled to navigate through these more restricted pathways. Strickland observed that passengers might experience longer flight times due to these circuitous routes.
In anticipation of escalating tensions, several airlines had already modified their routes. This week necessitated further adjustments with more flights diverting southwards to evade the conflict zones.
Strickland also noted potential peak-time bottlenecks, particularly for flights between Europe and Asia during the afternoon and evening, and vice versa in the early morning hours – adding another layer of complexity to airlines' operational planning.
Despite these challenges, most airlines have managed to maintain their schedules without incorporating additional stops. However, Qantas has introduced a refuelling layover in Singapore for its Perth to London service, and routes to India now typically bypass the Gulf region.
Close scrutiny will be maintained on developments in Azerbaijan, warned David Kaminski, air transport editor at Flight Global. Situated at a geopolitically strategic juncture, any escalation of conflict involving Azerbaijan could severely restrict airspace availability, stretching from Saudi Arabia to northern Russia, and lead to significant disruptions.
Should the conflict extend, Gulf carriers might need to reconsider their business strategies, which have hitherto turned urban centres in the region into thriving tourist and transit hubs.
Kaminski suggested, “Cities like Riyadh or Istanbul, especially with the latter’s airport expansion plans, could potentially exploit the prolonged disturbances, positioning themselves as alternative transit points.”
