Competition Watchdog Voices Alarm Over Big Tech's AI Dominance.
The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has sounded the alarm over the growing hegemony of big tech companies in the rapidly evolving artificial intelligence (AI) sector, citing it as a “real concern” for fair competition.
In its latest move, the CMA has initiated an investigation into the emergence of powerful AI tools known as foundation models. These models, which encompass text and image generators like ChatGPT, have caught the regulator's attention due to their potential impact on various facets of modern life.
Sarah Cardell, the CEO of CMA, expressed deep apprehensions about the situation, stating, “The essential challenge we face is how to harness this immensely exciting technology for the benefit of all, while safeguarding against potential exploitation of market power and unintended consequences.”
During her address in Washington on Thursday, Ms Cardell highlighted the interconnected network of AI partnerships among major players such as Google, Apple, Microsoft, Meta, Amazon, and chip-maker Nvidia. She underscored the risk posed by these firms' dominance in critical digital markets and their newfound leadership in foundation models, fuelled by their substantial computing power and access to skilled personnel.

The CMA warned that this concentration of power could lead to reduced competition, limiting choices, lowering quality, and driving up prices for both businesses and consumers. Furthermore, it could impede the flow of innovation and broader economic benefits derived from AI.
Drawing parallels with past experiences in digital markets, where a few dominant platforms emerged due to “winner takes all dynamics,” the CMA stressed the importance of learning from history. It emphasized the need to prevent powerful firms from using their dominance to stifle competition, even as it acknowledged their significant resources and innovation capabilities.
As part of its scrutiny, the CMA has identified over 90 interconnected investments and partnerships involving the same tech giants. While it commends the potential contributions of these firms, it remains steadfast in its commitment to ensuring a level playing field in the AI landscape.
The regulator is already engaged in reviewing Microsoft's multi-billion dollar collaboration with OpenAI, signalling its proactive stance in addressing concerns over big tech's dominance in the AI realm.
