Apple Enhances iPhones with ChatGPT in Major AI Update.

Apple is set to upgrade its Siri voice assistant and operating systems with the integration of OpenAI's ChatGPT, marking a significant move to strengthen its position in the artificial intelligence arena.

During its annual developers' conference on Monday, Apple unveiled the revamped Siri and a host of other innovative features. This overhaul is part of a new AI initiative, dubbed “Apple Intelligence,” designed to simplify navigation across Apple devices.

The updates will include access to ChatGPT via a partnership with OpenAI, enhancing tools like text and content generation. A test version is expected to roll out this autumn.

Apple’s CEO, Tim Cook, stated that this advancement would elevate the company’s products to unprecedented levels as he addressed attendees at the Worldwide Developers Conference at Apple's Cupertino headquarters. Despite the announcement, Apple's share price dipped by 1.91% on Monday.

Elon Musk, the owner of Tesla and Twitter/X, criticised the partnership, suggesting potential data security issues and hinting at a possible ban on iPhones within his companies. Apple has not yet responded to these claims.

Samsung also took a jab at Apple’s announcement, sarcastically welcoming them to the AI space.

Apple, which was surpassed by Microsoft as the world's most valuable company in January and again by Nvidia in June, faces the challenge of catching up to competitors who have embraced AI technology more swiftly.

What is ‘Apple Intelligence'?

Ben Wood, chief analyst at CCS Insight, commented that while Apple's new personal AI system might appease anxious investors, its reliance on ChatGPT could expose deeper issues.

“Apple Intelligence” is not a standalone product but an integral part of all Apple apps and devices, enhancing functionalities such as message drafting and route planning.

Siri has received a facelift with a new interface and more conversational capabilities to better assist users with their devices and apps. This development appears to acknowledge Siri's limitations, allowing ChatGPT to step in when necessary.

Apple emphasised the security of Apple Intelligence, noting that some processing would occur on the device itself, while more complex tasks would be handled in the cloud without storing any data there, preserving user privacy.

Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of software engineering, highlighted the system's ability to provide relevant and helpful intelligence while protecting privacy.

The OpenAI and Apple Collaboration

Apple’s integration of OpenAI’s ChatGPT has been anticipated but is notable for a company known for closely guarding its products. Recent errors by Google and Microsoft’s AI products have brought additional scrutiny to the field.

Historically, Apple has restricted its users from downloading apps outside of the App Store and using browsers other than Safari for security reasons, only changing its stance under EU pressure.

The announcement raises questions about Apple's capacity to compete with ChatGPT and highlights OpenAI's current dominance in AI.

In addition to the AI updates, Apple announced the UK release of its mixed reality headset, Vision Pro, on 12 July. Other new features revealed on Monday include:

– Sending texts via satellite
– Scheduling messages
– Controlling AirPods Pro with head gestures
– A cross-device password management app
– The ability to hide or lock apps with Face ID or passcodes
