Qantas Mistake: Hundreds Rebooked After Buying First-Class Tickets at 85% Off
Qantas has announced that it will either refund or rebook hundreds of passengers who mistakenly purchased heavily discounted first-class tickets due to a technical glitch. The Australian airline revealed that approximately 300 travellers seized the opportunity last Thursday when a coding error led to first-class fares between Australia and the US being offered at 85% below the usual price.
The airline has decided to rebook affected passengers into business class—one tier below first class—at no extra charge. However, Qantas acknowledged that the original deal was simply “too good to be true.”
The error meant that customers were able to purchase tickets for just a few thousand Australian dollars, a fraction of the typical AUD 20,000 (£10,000) cost. The full first-class experience, including premium amenities such as whiskey, champagne, à la carte dining, and luxurious sleep arrangements, was inadvertently offered at a steep discount.
Qantas noted that its terms and conditions allow for bookings to be cancelled if a pricing error is evident. In a statement, the airline said, “As a gesture of goodwill, we’re rebooking customers in business class at no additional cost. Customers also have the option of a full refund.”
Even with the downgrade to business class, passengers are still getting a considerable discount, paying just 35% of the usual fare. While such pricing errors are not uncommon in the airline industry, responses vary. For instance, in 2019, Cathay Pacific chose to honour business-class tickets mistakenly sold for a fraction of their value, whereas British Airways cancelled tickets sold at £1 instead of the intended £200.
