DNC’s Anti-Trump Speeches Throw Former President Off Course

Donald Trump, though not physically present in Chicago, remains a looming figure as the Democratic National Convention (DNC) unfolds. Despite claims from some aides that the former president is disinterested in what they describe as a Democratic “infomercial,” it's clear Trump is keeping a close eye on the proceedings, growing increasingly agitated by the attacks directed at him.

A senior campaign official, speaking anonymously, confirmed that Trump is indeed watching the DNC and has become irritated by the pointed criticisms. One of Trump's close allies, who communicates with him weekly, believes that if Trump sticks to discussing key issues like the economy, immigration, and crime, he stands a strong chance of winning in November.

At the start of the week, this strategy seemed within reach, with Trump planning a series of rallies across states like Pennsylvania, Michigan, North Carolina, and Arizona, each centred around these core topics. However, as the DNC continued its barrage of anti-Trump rhetoric in Chicago, staying on message has become increasingly challenging for the former president.

Donald Trump Struggles to Stay on Message Amid DNC Attacks

During his rally in North Carolina on Wednesday, Trump reverted to his classic style, turning the event into a referendum on his campaign strategy. He questioned whether he should stick to policy discussions or respond to the personal attacks from the Democrats. The crowd’s response was clear—they preferred the fiery, personal Trump over a dry recitation of policy points. Jokingly, Trump announced that his advisers were “fired” but ultimately admitted he would try to stick to policy while also responding to the attacks.

This has left his campaign team in a difficult position. Advisors are concerned that Trump’s penchant for controversy might overshadow their efforts to focus on policy and undermine his campaign. Already, Trump has made several controversial statements this week, including a late-night social media post criticising Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, who had delivered a powerful speech at the DNC. Trump’s comments, which highlighted Shapiro's Jewish heritage, were quickly picked up by the media as an example of racial dog-whistling.

Similarly, after the Obamas criticised Trump at the DNC, Trump responded at his North Carolina rally with a remark that many interpreted as racially charged by using Barack Obama’s middle name, “Hussein,” a tactic often used to stoke racial tensions.

The challenge for Trump’s team is that while controversy keeps Trump in the headlines, it also distracts from his attempts to highlight his opponent’s policy weaknesses. As one adviser lamented, “It doesn’t matter what he talks about for 45 minutes. One comment or answer to a question gives the left all they need to change the subject.”
