Astronomical Fine: Russia Demands Google Pay Two Undecillion Roubles
A Russian court has imposed an unprecedented fine on Google, demanding a staggering payment of two undecillion roubles – a figure with 36 zeroes following it. This astronomically high penalty, equivalent to approximately twenty undecillion in dollar terms, has been levied in response to Google’s decision to restrict Russian state media content on YouTube.
The fine eclipses Google’s own $2 trillion valuation and far exceeds the global GDP, which the International Monetary Fund currently estimates at $110 trillion. As state news agency Tass reports, the fine is accumulating rapidly, leading Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov to acknowledge he “cannot even pronounce this number,” while stressing that “Google management should pay attention” to the decision.
The legal dispute dates back to restrictions Google placed on 17 Russian media channels on YouTube beginning in 2020, a situation that intensified following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Western firms, including Google, largely exited the Russian market as sanctions tightened, though certain Google services remain accessible within Russia.
This latest escalation is part of an ongoing conflict between Russia and Google, which has faced significant fines from Russian authorities previously. In July 2022, Google was fined 21.1 billion roubles (£301 million) for failing to limit access to content Russia labelled as “prohibited,” specifically relating to coverage of the Ukraine conflict and other sensitive topics. Media freedom in Russia is highly restricted, with independent outlets facing significant curtailments on press freedom and freedom of expression.
Google has yet to comment publicly on this record-breaking fine, nor has it responded to requests for statements from the press.
