How Greeting Customers Can Deter Theft: Lancashire’s Proactive Approach to Retail Crime
Retailers in Lancashire have been offered fresh advice by local police on how to combat the rising tide of shoplifting – engaging with customers as soon as they set foot inside. According to Lancashire Constabulary, a prompt greeting can play a crucial role in preventing thefts, employing what is described as the “three-to-five second rule”. This strategy is grounded in the observation that shoplifters often gauge the feasibility of committing theft based on the immediacy of interaction from the staff.
“This approach not only fosters a positive shopping experience but also serves as a deterrent to those contemplating theft,” the force emphasised.

This guidance arises amid national concern over escalating retail theft, which has reached unprecedented levels since the inception of modern records. Data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) revealed a 20% surge in shoplifting incidents in England and Wales for the year ending in March, totalling 530,643 offences.
Tom Ironside, a lead figure at the British Retailers Association, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the dire implications of unchecked retail crime. “These statistics validate the longstanding concerns raised by retailers – that theft is increasingly rampant, often culminating in violence and abuse towards employees, whilst imposing a £2.2 billion annual burden on both businesses and consumers,” he explained.
The police force issued their recommendations as part of a digital manual titled ‘Securing Your Shop from Shoplifters', in line with Operation Vulture, an initiative aimed at clamping down on shoplifting. The advice includes maintaining a safe distance when interacting with suspected shoplifters, offering assistance, and signaling to a manager or security personnel if needed, all while staying vigilant to the potential aggression from those challenged.
Moreover, retailers are advised to ensure that the shop floor is adequately staffed, particularly highlighting the risk associated with having a solitary staff member on duty. Operation Vulture not only focuses on enhanced patrol and visibility in identified hotspots but also fosters collaboration with the retail industry to better comprehend the dynamics of retail crime and pinpoint perpetrators.
These collective efforts underscore a proactive stance against the challenges posed by retail theft, emphasizing community and police partnership as a cornerstone for safeguarding local businesses.
