“Bankruptcy Shock: Village Roadshow Blames Warner Bros Dispute for Financial Woes”
Village Roadshow Entertainment Group, the film production company behind iconic franchises like The Matrix, The Joker, and Ocean’s, has filed for bankruptcy protection in the US, according to a recent filing in a Delaware court. The firm attributes its financial woes to a costly legal dispute with former partner Warner Bros and a failed, expensive venture into independent film and television production.
In an effort to alleviate its financial burdens, Village Roadshow is considering the sale of its extensive film library for approximately $365m (£281m). The company's debts are estimated to range between $500m and $1bn. The fallout began in early 2022 following the release of The Matrix Resurrections on HBO Max, which led to a breakdown in relations with Warner Bros after Village Roadshow claimed it was excluded from any subsequent sequels or prequels. Chief restructuring officer Keith Maib stated in court that the arbitration with Warner Bros has resulted in over $18m in unpaid legal fees and irreparably damaged what was once the most lucrative partnership for the company.
Additional challenges include a studio venture launched in 2018 that failed to generate profits, compounded by a downturn in demand due to the pandemic and disruptions from the Hollywood strikes that began in May 2023. Moreover, in December, the Writers Guild of America banned its members from working with Village Roadshow over allegations of non-payment to contributors.
