China has begun sending back Boeing aircraft it ordered from the United States in its latest move against President Trump’s tariff regime. Boeing’s chief executive, Kelly Ortberg, revealed that two jets have already been returned, with a third soon to follow, after Beijing halted deliveries amid escalating trade tensions.
Under Mr Trump’s 145% tariffs on Chinese imports, China responded with levies of up to 125% on US exports, including aeroplanes. Mr Ortberg told CNBC that although 50 more aircraft were scheduled for delivery to Chinese carriers this year, customers there have indicated their unwillingness to accept them under the current trade barriers.
As America’s largest exporter—some 70% of Boeing’s commercial jet sales occur abroad—the company is now exploring alternative markets for 41 completed aeroplanes. “We will not continue to build aircraft for customers who will not take them,” Mr Ortberg stated, adding that new orders not yet in production could be reassigned if necessary.

Boeing maintains daily discussions with both President Trump’s team and cabinet secretaries in an effort to resolve the dispute. Meanwhile, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has described upcoming talks with China as “an incredible opportunity” for a “big deal” that would reduce Beijing’s reliance on manufacturing exports.
Mr Ortberg also warned that Boeing’s wider supply chain—from Japan to Italy—is feeling the pinch of newly imposed 10% universal tariffs. Despite these headwinds, Boeing reported narrower first-quarter losses and is targeting a ramp-up in 737 MAX production to 38 jets per month by 2025, following last year’s factory strike and production setbacks.
