M&S Confirms Customer Data Was Stolen in Cyber Attack
Marks & Spencer has disclosed that personal data belonging to some of its customers was exfiltrated during the recent cyber incident, which has also forced the suspension of its online ordering service. The supermarket and clothing retailer said the compromised details may include names, home addresses, telephone numbers, dates of birth, email addresses, household information and online order histories. Crucially, no full payment card data or passwords were accessed.
The ransomware attack, attributed to the DragonForce cyber‑crime group, struck three weeks ago, initially disrupting Click & Collect and contactless payments before the company halted website and app orders from 25 April. M&S has yet to announce when its full online services will resume. In the meantime, customers who ordered after 23 April are being refunded, and those who have received “ready to collect” emails can still pick up in‑store.
Chief Executive Stuart Machin said the group was writing to affected customers and would prompt all online users to reset their passwords “for extra peace of mind”. He stressed there is “no evidence” that the stolen data has been published, though the risk of identity fraud remains until the threat actors are contained.
Industry analysts at Bank of America estimate the outage is costing M&S around £43 million a week in lost sales. Shares in the retailer have fallen by approximately 12% over the past month.
M&S has notified the Information Commissioner’s Office and is working with specialist cybersecurity firms and law enforcement, including the National Cyber Security Centre and Metropolitan Police, to investigate. Experts warn that criminals could sell or misuse the stolen details to mount highly convincing phishing or identity‑theft scams.
