How Bet365's Denise Coates Became the UK's Top Earner with £280M Salary Amidst Company's Profit Dip

In an extraordinary display of financial reward, Denise Coates, the visionary behind Bet365, has once again emerged as one of the UK's highest-earning executives. With a staggering remuneration package of at least £280 million in 2025, her earnings have seen a substantial increase from the previous year's nearly £158 million, despite a notable downturn in her company's profits.

Operating as both the founder and CEO of Bet365, Ms. Coates received a salary of £104 million for the year ending in March 2025, as revealed by filings at Companies House. Moreover, holding a majority stake in the company, she was eligible for a minimum of half of the declared £354 million dividend, further bolstering her income.

This latest payout pushes Ms. Coates's cumulative earnings from Bet365 over the past ten years beyond the £2 billion mark, cementing her status amongst Britain's wealthiest individuals.

However, this extraordinary compensation package has drawn criticism. The High Pay Centre, a watchdog on executive pay, has voiced its disapproval, with Director Andrew Speke acknowledging Ms. Coates's positive contributions to her hometown of Stoke but critiquing the “eye-watering sums” she earns. Speke pointed out the ethical concerns associated with such wealth, especially when it stems from an industry intertwined with societal harms.

Despite attempts to reach out, Bet365 has yet to comment on Ms. Coates's remuneration.

This development comes amidst a challenging financial period for Bet365, with pre-tax profits plummeting to £339m from the preceding year's £596m, even though the company's overall revenue witnessed a 9% increase to £4bn.

Denise Coates's entrepreneurial journey began over two decades ago in a modest portable office in a Stoke-on-Trent car park. Under her leadership, Bet365 has evolved to become the city's largest private sector employer and a global online gaming juggernaut, offering a plethora of services from sports betting to casino games to a worldwide customer base.

One of the globe's most lucrative executives, Ms. Coates, has significantly impacted the UK's online gambling landscape, transforming her father's traditional bookmaking venture into a digital empire, alongside her brother, John Coates, who serves as co-chief executive.

Not only recognized for her lucrative earnings, but Ms. Coates also stands out as one of the nation's foremost taxpayers, with her significant salary contributing millions to public coffers in income tax and national insurance.

Bet365 reported a tax contribution of £482 million for the year up to March, marking an increase from the previous year's £364 million. This includes taxes stemming from dividend payouts.

In a notable act of philanthropy, Bet365 channelled £130 million to the Denise Coates Foundation during the year, supporting a range of charitable initiatives across education, arts, culture, and health sectors, underscoring Ms. Coates's commitment to leveraging her success for broader societal benefit.
